Episode 118 'Why Writers Write'

Image
It feels ironic to stare at a digital page and wonder what on earth to write, when the blog post title 'why writers write' may suggest that I know what I am doing.  The truth is, I have no plan. No heroic analogy or intellectual reasoning.  On the rare occasion that I may strike gold due to a misplaced anecdote or whimsical tale, the fact remains that  there was never a structure to this in the first place. This also reflects my life; no plan, no structure.  I write with emotion, not logic or guidelines. I bless my cotton socks that I was relatively auspicious in my English language and literature classes, upon the hundreds of books I must have read growing up. And so, the idea of writing my own book felt as natural as following the page with my finger.  The logic comes from experience. I feel that, although I didn't study a degree in creative writing, my understanding of sentence and paragraph structure is pretty sound. I have almost certainly written some terr...

Episode 114 'The Writer, the Workshop and the Portfolio'

Image
It seems particularly strange to come back to my blog after months of writing for other projects; writing that has fundamentally been in the same  style as my blog. Therein lies a kind of paradox, where my blog has been applied to other ventures like the fictional novel and script writing (I am currently doing) and it could become a little overwhelming. Is the blog taking over everything? Perhaps, but that's just my style. And fortunately, I haven't gotten sick of it yet!  It is the end of 2024. I am heeding the temptation to write a review of the year, because that means thinking about everything again (and I don't particularly want to do that). But there have been highlights and positives that I can build upon and go forth into the new year, possibly with a little more focus and less of a self conscious, self destructive mindset. My creativity has flourished from the good and bad times, which gives me strength and purpose. This was something I lacked recently, but after...

Episode 113 'My Wet Hot Portuguese Summer'

Image
It has been a long summer, but one that seems to have passed in the blink of an eye. Many things have happened, but I also feel like I have absolutely nothing to blog about. An age has past since the Annecy festival, and I sit here contemplating my 2024 thus far in regards to my life and career. But unfortunately, at the moment my writing currently goes hand in hand with my emotions (an interesting transition from the days of old, where my frivolously upbeat writing about how I built a pirate ship that one time , also seems so long ago) and I find it hard to focus on just the artwork.     Perhaps my sensitive side is getting the better of me. But I do actually have an explanation for this (I think) and it coincides with one of the many personal projects I have begun, now that I am utterly free of everything. My decision to leave Sardinha em Lata (the Lisbon based animation studio) remains steadfast in my resolve, although I do have moments where I miss the studio life. But thi...

Episode 111 'Perspective'

Image
Well, I finally did it. Whether it was due to the overwhelming anxiety-driven previous 12 months or simply pure instinct telling me to take the plunge into the unknown, I left the studio. It was something I had wanted to do for most of 2023, but the need for routine and stability amongst colleagues and friends overcame my adventurous ambitions. I think it helped me, the structure of daily familiarities; not quite a regular yoga practice but it was something.  But as I continued to work on these small projects, my motivation really waned. I must point out that this was, by no means, the fault of the studio. Whatever is happening with me, it's a personal matter (internally, I would say) and nothing to do with the work of others.   And for me to fully reflect on the mental, spiritual and physical factors of Tommy Grainger's life, I packed up the van and went on a six week road trip around Portugal and Spain.  I originally had the idea of keeping a travel blog filled wit...
